I received the St. Martin de Tours Foundation Scholarship the summer of 2014; from that moment on, my course to obtain my Radiology degree began to be paved. When my school counselor handed me the paper to apply I was hesitate due to the fact my senior class was overflowing with academically gifted seniors. The cross logo intrigued me and I reviewed the application form and read the mission and purpose for the scholarship and knew this one was special.
The questions for submission were different and the St. Martin de Tours Foundation really wanted to get to know YOU the applicant. They were interested in grades, extracurricular activities and community services but the essay questions forced me to look at and explained my strengths, weakness and wanted to know how I have handled the hurdles in life I had faced. Questions also made me do a lot of self-reflection and soul searching of how certain life experiences molded and guided me to where I am at today. After completing the scholarship application and providing intimate details of myself and experience that only my closest family members knew was a major step.

The Foundation takes their applicants very seriously and allows you to become a part of their family. Receiving the St. Martin de Tours scholarship was a wonderful financial assistance but what came later was more rewarding. St. Martin de Tours Foundation took time and surprisingly contacted me during my spring semester. Asking me how things were going and once again presented questions that made me take time to self-reflect and do some soul searching.
These days it is hard for everyone, and setting dreams and having goals are difficult to hold on to and fulfill. Acquiring a higher education is a gift I can only give myself but with my family, faith and now the Foundation’s support, life’s hurdles will be easier to face.
The St. Martin de Tours Foundation is unique in that it looks for applicants that are not necessarily the smartest but an applicant that had determination, compassion, hardworking, strong faith and wants to be part of making the world a better place. To St. Martin de Tours, I am not just another scholarship applicant, I am Hunner Huval; they know my dreams and aspirations of my future. Their financial and emotional support has allowed them to also be part of my future.
